Celebrating the Closing Retreat of the PEER Academy: A Milestone in Workforce and Economic Development

Jun 30, 2025

On June 11th and 12th, NYATEP team members Megan Farry and Joelle Monaco gathered in Detroit to celebrate the closing retreat of the Partnering Economic & Employment Research (PEER) Academy, a partnership of NYATEP with the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW). This marked the culmination of nine transformative months of learning, growth, and collaboration around how workforce development professionals can use labor market information (LMI). The retreat brought together economic and workforce development professionals from Western New York and Southeast Michigan to reflect on their personal and professional journeys and the collective impact they’re making.

Throughout the academy, 16 participating fellows engaged in immersive learning experiences and deepened their understanding of how to apply LMI to drive systems change. The retreat offered the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and recognize how far they’ve come.

Highlights from the Retreat:

Capstone Presentations
Fellows presented their capstone projects, real-world tools and strategies designed to improve the use of LMI within their organizations and regions. These innovative products aim to strengthen decision-making, enhance service delivery, and empower stakeholders across the workforce and economic development ecosystem.

Reflections on Growth
The closing retreat was not only about showcasing work, but also celebrating progress. Fellows shared powerful reflections on how the academy has shaped their leadership, expanded their networks, and deepened their commitment to equity and data-informed practice.

Exploring Detroit’s Ecosystem
Fellows had an opportunity to learn about Detroit’s rich history and dynamic economic and workforce development landscape. They connected with local leaders, gained fresh insights, and saw firsthand how regional collaboration is driving innovation in the Motor City.

Building Community
Beyond the formal sessions, fellows built lasting relationships. Whether sharing a meal, exploring the city, or exchanging ideas during breaks, the energy was one of curiosity, support, and inspiration.

NYATEP extends our deepest thanks to our incredible partners at CSW for their collaboration, dedication, and work in bringing the PEER Academy to life.

To the PEER Fellows, congratulations! Your work is already making a difference, and we can’t wait to see what you do next.

Here’s to the future of workforce development rooted in research, driven by equity, and powered by people!
