Mid- to high-level workforce professionals. Preferably three to five years of experience, serving in a leadership position within your organization, and having the opportunity to influence policy engagement or advocacy activities.

All accepted applicants MUST have an active NYATEP membership to participate; no exceptions will be made. 

Fellows will actively participate in the Academy over a six-month timeframe in various ways, including in-person and virtual training lessons, peer-to-peer exchange, conducting research and reviewing reading materials in advance to support stacked learning and technical assistance.

• Full participation and regular attendance is required. A full calendar of meeting dates and times will be provided. Any scheduling conflicts should be immediately addressed with the Academy facilitators. Absence without communication may result in expulsion from the program. 
• Group projects and legislative visits will require participants to dedicate time outside of programming hours to fully prepare for activities.

Academy costs:

• The Workforce Academy for Policy & Advocacy is included as a part of the NYATEP membership. However, Fellows are responsible for covering travel expenses, including hotel accommodations, transportation, and some meals during the academy.

Fellows of the Academy will:

• Gain a deep and practical understanding of State, Federal, and local legislative systems work
• Be exposed to National, State, and local experts
• Participate in legislative visits with Congressional and State Legislators to put their skills into practice
• Develop tangible tools and experience in creating and delivering a policy brief for state advocacy
• Create a network of workforce colleagues from across New York State
  

The Workforce Academy for Policy and Advocacy Fellows may impact on their organizations by providing: 

• Improved Advocacy Competencies: Fellows will obtain skills to navigate and influence the political, legislative, and budgetary processes, strengthening their organization’s advocacy efforts.
• Exposure to Subject Matter Experts: Fellows will engage with national, state, and local experts, who will provide valuable insights and knowledge that can be applied within their organizations.
• Practical Advocacy Experience: National and State legislative visits where Fellows will apply their academy learning.
• Expanded Advocacy Tools: Fellows will develop and deliver a policy brief that can be utilized or replicated to advance the organization's goals.
